SYNOPSIS
In New York City, Teresa, a clever but insecure young woman lives with her Dominican mother and two younger siblings. Stifled by her numerous responsibilities, and expectations: Med School, multiple jobs, family obligations, Teresa seeks refuge with Emma, an intrepid and vibrant woman she has a crush on. Her days are filled to the brink with obligations and unpleasantness, from taking care of her troublesome siblings who are always at each others throats to managing the egos of her bosses, and on top of that finding the energy to keep up with the studies she barely cares for. Her face all the while flipping through a myriad of fake smiles as she adapts to what each circumstance demands of her. One day while making a delivery for her job she stumbles upon a scene that derails her future. A man, Aiden, has been found killed without a clear motive and the police are looking for Emma, her friend who's just gone missing. Unable to return to her normal life, Teresa goes head first into a search for Emma, each clue slightly altering the idea she has of her. Is Emma the perpetrator or the next victim? Online Teresa discovers an image of Emma that is flimsy and superficial. Living a life of luxury and without consequences. But when she tries to go to the places Emma goes to, she cannot find her. As Teresa loses herself inside of Emma's life, her responsibilities try to bring her back to reality: Her mother fights, her siblings destroy everything in sight, and she's about to be sacked. Pursuing a clue she meets Magda unbeknownst to either of them, they are both lying, pretending to see what the other one knows of Emma. Unafraid for the first time in her life, Teresa lets her emotions get the best of her, falling for her. Despite this, something doesn't sit right with her and she can't stop her curiosity. She buys Emma's information online and breaks into her apartment. In there she sees Emma's life, the life that will never be Teresa's. What was once innocent rapidly shifts into envy. Distracted, Teresa is unable to notice that Emma has been hiding in the apartment until it is too late. Lost in her little fantasy, Teresa is blind to the danger she's under. Not even the photographs that lend a motive to Aiden's death are enough to bring her back to reality. And it is only at the last minute, when it is too late for her, that she understands everything. In that moment, Magda enters the apartment and acts in order to protect her secret. Emma, who for the first time has to face the consequences of her actions, runs away, but it doesn't matter how fast she runs, Magda is simply faster.
